Opened in July 2001 by Lord Martin Rees, the Astronomer Royal and former President of the Royal Society, the South Downs Planetarium has become a much-loved hub for space science and astronomy in the South of England. Its Founding Patron was the late Sir Patrick Moore — the renowned astronomer, author, and broadcaster — whose legacy continues to inspire visitors of all ages.
Serving a wide region across Sussex, Hampshire, Surrey, and beyond, the Planetarium has welcomed nearly 300,000 visitors to date. Each year, it hosts around 9,000 school children and 6,000 adults, offering captivating shows, educational talks, and hands-on experiences that bring the universe to life.
